Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) sent a press release touting the fact that House-passed marijuana banking provisions were left out of the final version of the stimulus bill recently approved by Congress.

  • “Speaker Pelosi’s partisan bill included… provisions ensuring cannabis businesses can work with federally backed banks and insurers.”

Two of the cannabis industry’s biggest players are headed to federal court as Canopy Growth Corporation sues GW Pharmaceuticals for allegedly infringing on its patent for a CBD extraction method.

  • “We have no interest in restricting access to Epidiolex, but the company should be fairly compensated for GW’s use of our intellectual property.“

Idaho activists, who have already filed a medical cannabis initiative for 2022, are now working on a separate measure to legalize recreational marijuana that they also hope to qualify for the state’s midterm ballot.

Georgia Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Jon Ossoff is using TikTok to tout his marijuana legalization support to young voters and has also highlighted cannabis and drug policy reform in several recent mainstream press interviews.

  • “I’m not just for decriminalization. I’m for full legalization of marijuana nationwide and the expungement of all records for nonviolent cannabis-related offenses.”

/ FEDERAL

President Trump pardoned a handful of additional people for marijuana and other drug offenses.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology tweeted about a grant it recently received from the Department of Justice to develop technologies to distinguish hemp from marijuana.

Sens. Jeff Merkley (D-OR) and Ron Wyden (D-OR) celebrated the inclusion of hemp provisions in stimulus and appropriations legislation.

Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) tweeted, “300,000 dead Americans and GOP @RepJimBanks  filed a complaint that a Democrat wore a marijuana mask… If I lived in #FtWayne, I’d be asking what the hell is wrong with that guy?”

Rhode Island’s House speaker said he will create a task force on marijuana legislation.

New Jersey’s Senate president tweeted, “As we head into the new year, it will be imperative for the state to focus on new emerging industries that can help kick start local economies. The thousands of #job opportunities provided by the #wind energy & #marijuana sectors will prove critical to future economic prosperity.”

The Virginia Supreme Court rejected a prosecutor’s request to block judges from requiring her to file a specific written explanation every time she wants to drop or amend marijuana charges.

Oklahoma regulators defended the state’s residency requirements for medical cannabis business ownership in federal court.

Maine regulators issued additional conditional marijuana business licenses.

Oregon regulators published a flow chart about hemp grower responsibilities.

The California Poison Control System sent a warning about cannabis edibles during the holiday season.

/ BUSINESS

Maryland Health Management, LLC and AMMA Investment Group, LLC will pay $175,000 to settle a federal sexual harassment lawsuit brought by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

iAnthus Capital Management and its New Jersey subsidiary are being sued for allegedly illegally highjacking the operation of the Pleasantville Alternative Treatment Center from MPX NJ, which shares a lease on the business.

Workers at CannTech LLC voted to ratify a union contract with  United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1776.
