Former PGA Tour winner Robert Garrigus has been suspended from the professional golf tournament after testing positive for cannabis consumption.

The PGA Tour has announced that Garrigus will receive a three-month suspension from the tour for violating the golf tournament's drug policy. Garrigus won the Children's Miracle Network Classic in 2010 and finished in the top three at the 2011 US Open. Now, the Idaho-born golfer appears to have hit a new, unenviable milestone as the first athlete to be suspended from the tour for use of what the PGA Tour calls a "drug of abuse." According to the tour's anti-doping manual, these are defined as "recreational drugs that are often times obtained illegally."

"The PGA Tour announced today that Robert Garrigus has violated the PGA Tour Anti-Doping Program by testing positive for a substance identified as a drug of abuse," reads the PGA Tour statement announcing Garrigus' suspension, as obtained by Golfworld. "In accordance with the PGA Tour Conduct Policy that applies to violations involving drugs of abuse, he has been suspended for a period of three months."

While the official tour statement does not say which banned substance Garrigus was caught doing, Garrigus confirmed in a twitter post that it was cannabis.

As Garrigus mentions in his post, the professional golfer has previously spoken out about overcoming a dependency to marijuana. Recreational cannabis is currently not legal in Arizona where Garrigus lives with his family.
