The FDA & CBD Could Spark Momentum For Marijuana Stocks

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will stop receiving comments following May 31st’s public hearing regarding cannabidiol, aka CBD, on July 2nd. The FDA is anticipated to begin drafting the regulations and foundation of the rapidly emerging U.S CBD industry.

Medical Marijuana: Minnesota, Massachusetts & Virginia

Starting in July, medical cannabis will become more accessible to consumers in a number of states. In Minnesota, patients with Alzheimer’s Disease are now eligible to use medicinal cannabis. The “initial access certification” program has launched in Massachusetts. This permits patients to obtain an initial two-week supply as they wait to receive their official registration card by mail.

Beginning this month, New Mexico decriminalized cannabis possession after a bill passed and became law in April. It would rather incur a penalty assessment that comes with a $50 fine.

New Jersey Gives A Reason To Watch Certain Pot Stocks

Starting July 1st in New Jersey, companies are able to apply for new medical marijuana licenses. There are only 12 vertically integrated licenses in the state with half of those not yet operational. The garden state intends to issue up to 108 additional licenses throughout the state and will offer up to 54 dispensary licenses, 30 processing permits, and 24 cultivation licenses.

Here’s some context on the company. The two co-founders of Nabis Holdings were behind MPX Bioceutical. MPX Bioceutical completed the largest takeover in the U.S. cannabis space to date. With such a heavy proven track record, Nabis Holdings is continuing to show why they are a thriving cannabis stock.

They’ve also stated they want to work in other parts of the cannabis market. With a strong focus on revenue and, EBITDA and growth. Nabis Holdings remain an interesting pot stock to watch.

A Big Announcement for Nabis Holdings

The company recently announced that they have completed a purchase of around 2.26 million shares of Cannova Medical Ltd. This amount represents a 49% interest in the latter, which provides new and innovative solutions for consuming cannabis.

For those who don’t know, Cannova is an Israeli company that has been working to create a new way to use and consume cannabis. They have done this through a sublingual (under the tongue) method that can consistently deliver fast and excellent results to users.

The company has various patent-protected processes that they like to use. Which can in turn help with everything from pain-management to concentration and as an antidepressant. The news of this purchase continues to show that Nabis Holdings remains a key part of the pot stock niche.

On the Other Side of the Market

iAnthus Capital (NASDAQOTH:ITHUF) currently stands as an operator of high quality dispensaries and products. The company recently acquired MPX Bioceutical (the company mentioned above). Which has helped them to move deeper into the cannabis market?

The company has also stated that they have a heavy focus on CBD. With most of the CBD products being distributed to over 1,000 different retail locations.

The marijuana industry has been booming for over a few years at this point. With so many companies working to outproduce the next. It seems as though the issue of overproduction is something that many have begun to worry about.

One of the key parts of the marijuana market has been US states implementing their own cannabis laws. It is difficult to characterize the industry in America as a whole. Given each state has chosen to set laws up differently.

While some have stated that the cannabis markets individuality determined by the state-wide basis is a good thing, others have argued that the segmentation may in fact be its demise.

Oregon as an Example

The state of Oregon has long been considered one of the founding locations for marijuana legislation. The state recently announced that they have signed a new bill into law that would allow the exportation of cannabis across state lines if the federal law complies. This seems like an effort to curb the overproduction that the state has seen in the past few months.

Only four years ago when Oregon decided to legalize the substance, the state gave out more than enough marijuana licenses. Since that time, consumers have seen the price of weed drop by as much as $5 per gram. This amount is quite unheard of as the taxed amount of cannabis should lead the price to be much higher.

It seems as though the state failed to consider the principle of supply and demand. This is due to the state handing out a large amount of licenses to grow. One of the ways to curb this has been other states more selective choice of who they give grow licenses to. This has meant less competition in the market and therefore, higher prices.

What’s Next for the Industry?

Another key factor that has increased the suspicion of overproduction and oversupply, has been the amount of investments into the growth of the substance. Since 2018, around $3.5 billion has been invested in the growth of cannabis across the board.

The amount of money put into the industry has not been segmented to effect the different parts that need capital such as software and increasing the amount of distribution opportunities that they have. This has created yet another problem for businesses that are overproducing to deal with.

The thing is that it seems as though this is hitting upon some middle-ground. As we continue to inch toward the future, growers are beginning to see the demand that they need to produce rather than just reaching toward the highest amount of production.

This however, is something that is good for those who consume the substance as prices should remain quite low. The hopes are that in the near future, cannabis companies can maintain some stability in terms of production and the price of the substance overall.

High Volatility In The Cannabis Stock

Various players and corporations are venturing into the marijuana industry because it is getting a lot of attention. AKERNA (NASDAQ:KERN) is one example of this. Akerna was formed after a merger between the cannabis-software service company MJ Freeway and an acquisitions company, MTech Acquisitions. The merger was announced in October was finally completed last week.

Akerna became the first cannabis-based company to be listed on Nasdaq without an IPO or over-the-counter exchange option. It was open for trading on Nasdaq on Tuesday, June 18. However, the first day of trading saw only mild trades (over 120,000 shares) with stocks closing at $14.85 per share. The following two days saw an improvement with more than 3 million shares being traded each day. This led to the value of the cannabis stock to triple to $49.80 on Wednesday. It continued to grow over 50% to $73 Thursday morning. Since then, Akerna’s stock has sharply corrected, closing at $21.70 during Thursday’s session. After rising 600%, the stock has lost the majority of its gain.

Marijuana Stock’s Business Model

This business pick-up was a result of the unique business model of Akerna. Akerna’s primary business includes seed-to-sale technology which involves the development of unique software for the cannabis industry. This is quite valuable, especially since the cannabis industry needs to be sternly overseen. The software would help the state keep a track of the plants grown, ensuring no illegal dealing. As cannabis’ federal status remains illegal, states would benefit greatly from the software.

Another focus for the company would be providing consultancy services in the cannabis industry. This would help other marijuana businesses better connect with its customers by understanding their requirements and needs. Akerna would also help the companies understand the regulations more clearly, aiding them with license procedures as well. With clients in 29 of the 33 cannabis-legal states and 11 counties globally, the business does seem promising.

However, there are various flaws that an investor should be aware of. One of them is the company’s dependency on cash, which could leave the whole business invaluable. The financials of MTech have not impressed either. Its sales fell from $5.53 million to $4.97 million in the first 6 months of the 2018 fiscal year. The net loss reported also rose from $2.9 million to $4 million.

Another concern is the large sales percentage, 43% of total sales, by Washington and Pennsylvania. This shows Akerna’s reliance on these two. A contractual change with them could leave a heavy dent on the cannabis company’s revenue. On top of this, Akerna plans on performing an aggressive acquisition. This requires a major portion of shares to be diluted into common stock so they can fund the acquisition. Another common weakness seen in most cannabis-based organizations is the lack of proper internal controls over the firms’ finances.
